Walter Taylor Bridge - Correspondence re construction and Council acquisition 1931 -1980

Councils' original correspondence file for the bridge dates from 1931 and includes and original sketch by Walter Taylor for a "Proposed Indooroopilly- Chelmer Suspension Bridge".  Also includes discussion with State Government about the Toll and legislation needed to enable the bridge to have a toll, subsequent The Tolls on Privately Constructed Road Traffic Facilities Act of 1931, land resumptions and subsequent takeover by Council in 1966. Also, information about the formation of Radnor Street/ Riverview Terrace to insect with Coonan Street in 1958.  Later material about maintenance of the bridge after takeover. Also includes news clippings.

The Indooroopilly Toll Bridge was officially opened on February 14, 1936.  It was built by the Indooroopilly Toll Bridge Company set up by the designer of the Bridge, Walter Taylor.    The last Toll on the bridge was collected in October 1965.  In April 1956 the bridge was renamed The Walter Taylor Bridge.  The bridge is owned and maintained by Brisbane City Council who took over the Bridge in 1965.  It was the only inhabitable bridge in the Southern hemisphere.  Council rented out both towers of the bridge until 2009 - there are over 120 stairs to climb to the property.
